I spent this past fall studying design abroad in Florence, Italy. Instead of blogging a play-by-play of my adventures, I decided to collect textures from all parts of the country. Rome, Milan, Florence, Pompeii, Arezzo, Cortona, Bolonga, Cinque Terre, and Venice are all represented.

Texture has long been one of my favorite design elements. It is an often-overlooked detail that can add life to any design. I love to add a vintage or worn look to many of my designs because it makes them more human. Textures are especially great for web design since the medium is inherently digital and flat. I’ve found the key is to add just enough texture so it’s not noticeable, but people can still tell it’s there. In most cases you want to feel the texture instead of see it. Just be careful not to overdo it. A little really goes a long way.
